Foundation and Trust Status

Changing to a Foundation school and acquiring a Charitable Trust

The Governing Body of Flixton Girls’ High School is proposing to change from a Community school to a Foundation school and acquiring a Charitable Trust to be called ‘The Flixton Well Women Trust’.

The core aim of becoming a Foundation and Trust school is to build strong and sustainable partnerships to raise standards and to remove the barriers to learning and achievement by raising aspiration and empowering our young women to achieve excellence in all aspects of their lives through an attitude of ‘healthy body, healthy mind’.

What are Foundation and Trust schools?

If we were to become a Foundation school it would lead to a change in governance of the school which means the Governing Body would be:

• The employer of all staff
• Responsible for its own admissions
• The owner of land and assets

A Trust school is a Foundation school with a Charitable Foundation (or Trust) – in our case ‘The Flixton Well Women Trust’ to support the school.  The change of status will mean:

• It will hold the assets in trust for the school

• It will appoint 2 Trustees to strengthen the Governing Body of the school

The school would remain as a local authority maintained school, and we would continue to provide the statutory curriculum and a range of extra activities, just as we do now. In real terms, there will be little difference to the day-to-day operations.

Why do it?

It would allow us to strengthen our partnerships with a range of other schools and external agencies to broaden and strengthen opportunities for all students.

The creation of our Well Woman Centre would establish FGHS as a centre for professional development and Masters delivery, together with the commitment to providing enhanced opportunities for the participation in sport and outdoor education which will impact directly on young women, improving their health and well-being and raising levels of achievement.

Will it make a difference?

• The Trust will ensure that high quality provision is secured in the present for future generations.  This will be done through the development of actual services and enhanced partnership activities that will be sustained and secure.

• The establishment of the Trust will create sustainable partnerships not threatened by changes in personnel.

• The combined efforts and expertise of the proposed partners will provide the school with a wealth of experience to draw upon.

The vision for the creation of the ‘The Flixton Well Woman Trust’ would make the school’s priorities crystal clear – it is about securing all that is necessary to delivery high quality learning resulting in happy, confident, well-rounded young women, prepared as our role models for the future.
